The glorious religion of peace, Islam, is based on five pillars, these are:
1. Shahada: Faith
Shahada is a declaration of faith. It is a set statement normally recited in Arabic: lā ʾilāha ʾillā-llāhu Muḥammadun rasūlu-llāh (لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا الله مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ الله) “There is no god but God (and) Muhammad is the messenger of God.” It is essential to utter it to become a Muslim and to convert to Islam.
2. Salaah: Prayer
Salaah consists of five daily prayers. Fajr salaah(dawn prayer), Dhuhr salaah (noon prayer), ʿAṣr salaah(afternoon prayer), Maghrib salaah(sunset prayer), and ʿEshāʾ salaah(night prayer). Each one of these five daily prayers is compulsory (Fard) upon every believer.
Zakāat is charity which is obligatory upon one who possess nisab; the minimum amount which one needs to possess in order to give zakaat.
4. Sawm: Fasting
It is obligatory for a Muslim to fast; by abstaining from eating, drinking and sexual intercourse from dawn until sunset in the holy month of Ramadaan.
5. Hajj: Pilgrimage
Hajj is an obligatory pilgrimage to the Holy city of Makkah during the sacred month of Zul Hijjah (the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar) which is performed by the one who has the means to do so.
